  9. This is the freeware version of Eudora for Windows. There is also a
  10. commercial version of Eudora called Eudora Pro (Version 2.0 and
  11. above).  If you would like information about the commercial version, a
  12. brief description is provided in the Help menu of this freeware.  Select
  13. About Eudora Pro to display this dialog. You can also subscribe to
  14. the QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies (QUEST) mailing list by
  15. selecting QUEST News from the Help menu.  This list will provide
  16. subscribers with occasional information about Eudora, Eudora Pro,
  17. and other QUEST products.

  21. The user manual is formatted in Word for Windows version 2.0 format.

  24. Minimum Requirements
  25. --------------------

  27. Eudora Light requires the following:
  28.  
  29. -  IBM PC or compatible.
  30. -  Microsoft Windows 3.1 for 16-bit version;
  31.    Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.5 for 32-bit version.
  32. -  Winsock 1.1 API compliant networking package (not needed for 
  33.    serial connection).
  34. -  A mail account with an Internet Service Provider or an 
  35.    Internet-style network.
  36. -  Access to your mail account via a modem (9600 bps or higher recommended) 
  37.    or Internet-style network connection.
  38. -  Microsoft (or compatible) mouse (highly recommended)
  39. -  At least 2M of free disk space (more depending on mailbox sizes)

  44. Installation
  45. ------------

  47. To install Eudora, download the software archive (eudor154.exe) into a 
  48. directory on your PC. Double click on the archive to unpack it into the 
  49. same directory, then follow these directions:
  50.  
  51. 1.  Exit any applications you are running.
  52.  
  53. 2.  In the Windows Explorer or File Manager, double-click on Setup.exe 
  54.     to start the Setup program.
  55.  
  56. 3.  Read the Welcome screen, then click Next.
  57.  
  58. 4.  Specify a directory to install Eudora, or your current Eudora 
  59.     directory if you have one, then click Next. 
  60.         
  61. 5   Specify which version of Eudora you wish to install, then click
  62.     Next.  If you are unsure of which version to install, follow the 
  63.     recommendation made by the Setup program.  
  64.         
  65.     If you choose to install the 32-bit version of Eudora but do not
  66.     have 32-bit TCP/IP software, you will receive an error message. 
  67.     The 32-bit version will not work without 32-bit TCP/IP software,
  68.     so you are given the option to install the 16-bit version instead.

  70. 6.  Verify that the displayed settings are correct, then click Next 
  71.     (or use the Back button if you need to go back and make changes).  
  72.  
  73. 7.  Eudora is installed in the destination directory, and you are 
  74.     prompted for whether or not you want to view the README file.
  75.     Click Yes.

  77. Note:   Always keep the Help file in the same directory as the executable.

  80. Cusomizing the Installation
  81. ---------------------------

  83. The SETUP.INI file in the installation archive lists all the settings that
  84. effect the install procedure.  You must alter these settings to modify
  85. the installation process.  
  86.  
  87. Eudora Light installs many default dialup scripts.  It will also automatically
  88. install any script called "CUSTOM" that is located in the install directory.  
  89. For example, if you place "CUSTOM.MID", "CUSTOM.NAV" and "CUSTOM.MOD" in the
  90. same directory as the SETUP.EXE application, setup will install all three
  91. files into the user's scripts directory.

  95. Configuration

  98. The first time you run Eudora you will have to edit some of the
  99. configuration information in order to be able to send and receive mail.
  100.  
  101. Select Options... from the Tools Menu.
  102.  
  103. The fields you need to review are:
  104.  
  105. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer that
  106. runs a POP3 server.  This is the account to which your e-mail messages are
  107. delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora program on your PC.  In
  108. this field, type your login name for this account and the full (domain)
  109. name of the computer, separating them with an "@" sign.  For example, if
  110. your assigned login name is "jsmith", and the name of the computer where
  111. you receive e-mail is "mailhost.wxyz.com", type "jsmith@mailhost.wxyz.com"
  112. in this field.
  113.  
  114. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, as it appears here, is
  115. displayed along with your return address in your outgoing mail.
  116.  
  117. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
  118. Protocol) server program is necessary.  You need not have a login to this
  119. computer, but you must have access to it through your network.  If the
  120. computer on which you have your POP account is also an SMTP server, leave
  121. this field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name of the computer you want to
  122. use as your SMTP server.
  123.  
  124. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return
  125. address.  If you wish to use a return address other than your POP account,
  126. enter it here.

  129. If you have the New Mail Notification "Sound" switch on, then when new mail
  130. arrives, you will hear a notification sound.  In order for this to work,
  131. your system must have a properly configured sound board, or you must have
  132. installed the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker (anonymous ftp from
  133. ftp.qualcomm.com the file /quest/windows/utils/SPEAK.EXE).  Eudora has a
  134. built-in sound, but if you wish to supply your own, it must be in .WAV
  135. format.  To change the default new mail sound, select the Settings... menu
  136. item in the Special menu, and then select the Getting Attention category.
  137. Select the button under the "Play a sound" checkbox, and a dialog will
  138. prompt you for the sound file.
  139.  
  140. Note that this driver will only work for the Windows 3.X and Windows 95
  141. operating systems.  It will not work for Windows NT.
  142.  
  143. If the mail you are sending is bouncing back to you saying that the message
  144. does not have a Date: header, add the following entry to your EUDORA.INI
  145. file:

  150. where xxx, yyy are timezone abbreviations like PST, PDT, CDT, and nnn is
  151. the offset in hours WEST of GMT (i.e., those that are east of GMT should
  152. enter a negative number here).  xxx is the timezone during Standard Time
  153. and yyy is the timezone during Daylight Savings Time.  If you do not change
  154. your clocks during Daylight Savings Time, leave yyy blank.
  155. Here's some samples:

  160. If you don't specify a TimeZone entry, then a Date: header will not be put
  161. jsmita outgoing messages, which is fine for most users because their mail
  162. server will insert the correct Date: header.  The moral is: if you don't
  163. get messages bounced because of a missing Date: header, then leave the
  164. TimeZone entry alone.

  168. TCP/IP Services
  169. ---------------

  171. Eudora makes use of several different TCP/IP services, and has default port
  172. numbers for these services.  Most sites put these services on the default
  173. ports, but some may not.  Contact your site network administrator to make
  174. sure that the following services listed below are indeed on the default
  175. port numbers.  If they aren't, you'll have to make some changes to some
  176. configuration file(s) in your TCP/IP package (usually to a SERVICES file).
  177.  
  178. Below are a list of the services which Eudora uses, and what they might
  179. look like in a typical services file.  The names of these services must be
  180. exactly as named here (e.g., the entry for the POP3 service must be "pop3"
  181. and not "pop-3").  Make sure that you make any changes necessary for your
  182. TCP/IP package to specify the location of the SERVICES file.

  190. To use Ph (if your site has a Ph server):

  196. To use the Change Password... function in Eudora, your site must have a
  197. password changing server installed.  See the directory
  198. <ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com/quest/unix/servers/password> for examples of password
  199. changing servers):

  202. There are also entries in the [Settings] section of the EUDORA.INI
  203. file for default port numbers of services.  These are provided for setups
  204. in which the SERVICES file cannot be modified.  Do not use these entries
  205. unless the services are not on default port numbers and you cannot modify
  206. them in your TCP/IP package.  Here are sample INI entries:

  233. computer you have, which operating system you're using, and
  234. anything else you think might be relevant.

  274. good choice, as I like to see all the interesting places that Eudora is
  275. being used.  Humorous or unusual postcards are a favorite of mine, and you
  276. never know when I may decide that someone's postcard was interesting enough
  277. to make them a tester for the commercial version of Eudora.
